Public Works Chora (PWC) at TINAG Festival, London

Public Works Chora (PWC London Reflections
Since geographically – or otherwise- no coherent financial district can be located on the island of Cyprus, in this manifestation of PWC the focus will be the Church’s role in shaping financial institutions and subsequently political and cultural conditions on the island. The 1st October 2010 is the official 50th anniversary of independence of Cyprus from the British Empire. This process was lead by the first president of the island, and leader of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III. Through a variety of gestures, archival material and visual references PWC aim to trace the possible –even conjectural- relationships the Church of Cyprus has with market forces, master- planning, land distribution, issues of ownership, taxation, charity and other vis-a-vis the idiosyncratic presence of social engagement on the island. Also, as part of this specific installment two presentations will contextualise the economic history and development of the island and the role, presence and understanding of the public art commissioned by the Church. Abstracts and bios for the Roundtable, 23 of April speakers

Nicosia: Memory, Place, Trauma
Dr Gabriel Koureas

How can divided Nicosia, scarred by wars and ethnic conflicts that have left open wounds in the fabric of the city, try to heal itself and incorporate its traumatic memories within its spatial organization? Is such an incorporation possible? In order to investigate these questions, this paper is going to examine in more detail the visual and sensorial language of the city of Nicosia concentrating on issues of space, borders (both physical and psychic), memory and trauma. The paper interrogates artistic intersections in the spatial and psychic parameters of the city in order to argue that artistic production in the city of Nicosia is embedded in its spatiality. Like the space of the city these works demand our participation, our interaction through all our senses. In experiencing both these works and the city we are unable to rely solely on vision, as they call for our hearing, smell and tactility in comprehending spatially and artistically the impact of war and conflict. It is only by understanding the sensorial impact of trauma that we can begin to comprehend the political and social conditions in the city of Nicosia and its artistic production.

Green Line Scapes. Nicosia's Dead Zone as a River of Memory.

Dr. Anna Grichting

The interstitial spaces of conflict in urban zones - such as the Green Line in Nicosia and the Berlin Wall - offer opportunities to reweave coherent relationships between disrupted networks, fabrics, ecologies and societies and to intervene with imaginative and far-sighted projects that are compatible with what the architect Giancarlo De Carlo names the genus loci - the genetic code or spirit of the place. The reconstructions of Berlin after the fall of Wall sought, for the most part, to conceal the signs of its tragic history and to fill in the gaps created by the division, as the economic forces of real estate swept into the liberated No-Man's land. 20 years after the reunification of the city, some inhabitants feel that the Wall was dismantled too quickly and without vision, swallowing up a portion of the city's history. How can we learn from Berlin? Through a strategic exploration of the landscapes of the Green Line we can seek ways to reweave the distant and recent past into the future urban landscape and reveal the palimpsests of the Green Line rather than negate the recent past. This excavation produces an archeology of the conflict (Quim Rossell) that lays the foundations for a future Landscape of Memory through a collaborative research and design process which involves civil society on both sides and which participates in the reconciliation and healing of the territorial and social wounds. The GreenLineScapes Laboratory explores the ecological and cultural opportunities that can emerge in the liminal landscapes of the Green Line. We will investigate some of the possible urban, architectural and artistic uses of the Green Line of Nicosia, and examine how it could become a beautiful scar, as well as a space that provides a new reading of the walled city of Nicosia and its process of depolarization.

Public Art and Social Engangement in Contemporary Art
Dr Cameron Cartiere

Dr. Cartiere will present a number of public art projects from around the world that focus specifically on social engagement and border issues including works by Judy Baca, Lucy Orta and Alfredo Jaar.

Cameron Cartiere is co-director of the Centre for Media, Culture and Creative Practice at Birkbeck, University of London (www.bbk.ac.uk/creative). Dr. Cartiere is a senior lecturer for the Arts Policy and Management MA programme at Birkbeck and specialises in public art, urban renewal, sculpture parks, cultural heritage and curatorial practice. She is co-editor of The Practice of Public Art (Routledge, 2008), co-author of the Manifesto of Possibilities: Commissioning Public Art in the Urban Environment (www.manifestoofpossibilities.co.uk) and author of the online resource, The International Directory of Sculpture Parks & Gardens (www.bbk.ac.uk/sculptureparks).

Public Works στην APOTHEKE

Εντός του κατακερματισμένου και δι-πολικού κέντρου της Λευκωσίας οι κληρονομιές του 20ου αιώνα και οι μεταμορφώσεις του 21ου, προκαλούν τη μοιρασμένη τούτη πόλη σε μια ενδοσκόπηση έναντι των αξιώσεων της ως παραγωγός στο διεθνές πολιτιστικό λεξιλόγιο/προσκήνιο και τα μελλοντικά αρχιτεκτονικά της βήματα. Απ' την άλλη η τέχνη, αφήνοντας πίσω την πρόκληση των συστημάτων παράγωγης γνώσης, μέσω της αισθητικής εμπειρίας αναδιπλώνεται εξω-ιδρυματικά, διαλογικά, συνομιλητικά, δημόσια. Ένα ρόλο που μπορεί να αποκτήσει η τέχνη είναι να μας προκαλέσει να σκεφτούμε τον κόσμο μας εκ νέου, να μας προκαλέσει να αναθεωρήσουμε την αίσθηση της κοινότητας μας. Πώς ανταποκρίνεται η Λευκωσία, με τις πολλαπλές και μοιρασμένες κοινότητές της σε αυτές τις εξελίξεις; Ποια είναι η ευθύνη μας ως καλλιτέχνες, πολιτιστικοί παραγωγοί, αρχιτέκτονες, ιστορικοί, θεωρητικοί στη διαμόρφωση της πόλης ως κοινότητας; Πώς χρησιμοποιούνται οι οπτικές γλώσσες και πώς θα μπορούσαν να διαμορφωθούν για να αλληλεπιδράσουν του δημόσιου, κοινού χώρου και του κοινού ως έχει;

Public Works at APOTHEKE, Nicosia, Cyprus
Roundtable and Public Workshops
23rd and 24th April 2010

In the bi-polar centre of Nicosia the legacies of the C20th and the transformations of the C21st are challenging this divided city to introspection, vis-a-vis its claims to an international vocabulary, however ignored, and its architectonic steps forward. Moving on from the modernist legacy of challenging systems of knowledge through aesthetic experiences, art forms have developed into the manifestations of littoral, conversational or dialogue based public art. A role that art can assume is to challenge us to think of our world anew and trigger thought on our sense of community. How does Nicosia's fragmented sense of community respond to such developments? How are we – art practitioners, cultural producers, architects, historians, theorists - responsible in shaping that community and how visual language is used to interact not only with a highly charged public space but also with the public that inhabits that space?

Following the Greek translation and publication of certain key text regarding the notions of participation, space and the arts, Public Works, a two day roundtable will be held on the 23rd and 24th April 2010 at APOTHEKE, across the Old Town of Nicosia.
Divided into an afternoon of curated discussions and short presentations on the 23rd April and an active engagement with the public space of the locale on the 24th April, Public Works will attempt to explore issues re:

*Nicosia as a space and place of conflicts.
*The public sphere and the subsequent and diverse uses of art in this specific locale.
*The public(s) that inhabits Nicosia, the degrees of its representations, and how and if art can attribute a visual voice.
*Historical and theoretical paradigms of social engagement through the arts and the importance of introducing such vocabulary into the Cypriot setting.
*Art as a contact zone for conflict resolution.

The workshops and events of the second day will also include:
* A workshop with children, aiming to reclaim and construct one of the numeorus temporary car parks in the city sprouting on evry other empty lot and transform it into an ad-hoc playground.
*A tour of stencils and graffiti and their importance as a form of visual communication and social engagement in the walled part of Nicosia by graffiti artists, taggers and activists.
*A presentation by the auotnomous left group of the history of their rich relationship with the city of Nicosia.
*A sensory challenge through a collaborative dance performance.
*A street party - a hisotrically traceable mode of public engagement with the city that has attracted multiple reactions and has partly rekindled the public interest for the Old Town of Nicosia.
*An exhibition of past and present collaborative, community-based and socio-spatially involved works at APOTHEKE.
